Some say the Jubalaires were the first rappers. Most say that's probably not true, but it makes for good listening all the same. Their rhythmic, spoken delivery certainly has a lot in common with early hip-hop. There are shades of other early pioneers like Pigmeat Markham. In reality, though it’s impossible to claim they invented rap. The genre had too many influences to pinpoint one.
The group of four were formed in the 30s, and they were pioneers in gospel music. The jazz and blues in their songs helped define the genre. Their performances meanwhile were energetic and spirited, arms swinging gently like they were on a morning stroll. Their harmonies were tight, and their voices extraordinary.
‘The Preacher and the Bear’ isn’t their own song. It was written a long time before and unlike many gospel/religious songs is funny. It’s about a preacher who decides to go hunting on the sabbath and ends up in a gruesome scrap with a grisly bear.
Have a listen and decide for yourself if you think it’s the genesis of rap!
